Station, for rented and free quarters for European subordinates, for an extension to the Central Police Station, for the paving of the main roads in the City of Victoria, for the additional service reservoir, &c., at West Point, for the Tytan Tuk Scheme, Second Section, and for the Typhoon Refuge.

HONGKONG: Buildings. Dealing in the first place with buildings already under construction I have to explain that the excess of 35,000 on the original estimate for the new Magistracy is due to the necessity for pulling down and rebuilding the existing retaining wall supporting the East wall of the new building and to the additional cost of the fittings and furniture to the Courts caused by the rise in the cost of teak

The excess of $7,500 on the original estimate for the quarters for subordinate officers at Mount Parish is accounted for by the cost of additional retaining walls required to support a portion of the site which shewed indications of movement, while the increased estimates for the Police Married Quarters, for the Geol Extension, and for the Hill District School are due to the addition- al cost of piling the site which proved to be of loose earth for a considerable depth, alterations in the design and construction, and the additional cost of erecting buildings on the summits of the Peak respectively.

The 880,000 entered for the Wireless Telegraph Station is a re-vote of a portion of the sum inserted in the current Estimates.

Provision has been made for additions to the Government Villes at the Peak. The class of officers entitled to use the villas has largely increased during the last few years, and the proportion of married to unmarried officers of this class has like- wise increased, with the result that the demand exceeds the avail- able accommodation.

I have included a sum of $12,000 for a Store with an office attached thereto at the Government Civil Hospital. At present
